I have been tagged by Mum at TheMadHouse, to do the Photo Lottery Meme, the rules are:
1. Open the first (oldest) photo folder in your computer library
2. Scroll to the 10th photo
3. Post the photo and the story behind it
4. Tag 5 or more people to continue the thread
The oldest folder on the PC which isn’t archived is from 2005 and is from the night of Liverpool FC’s homecoming after winning the Champions League Cup the day before. The one were they were 3-0 down at half-time, then had a miraculous comeback in the second half to draw. The final then went to penalties, resulting in Liverpool winning the cup for the fifth time (and therefore getting to keep it – apparently this is very significant).
I’m not a crazy football supporter, but my husband is, and he was working in Liverpool on the day of the homecoming. Our daughter desperately wanted to go and as we knew we would have a safe view from my husband’s workplace I agreed to take her and her baby sister on the train.
It was a very hot day at the end of May, and at each station as we approached Liverpool, the train was becoming more and more cramped. So much so that it didn’t even stop at the last couple of stations as it was too full.
We waited for hours beyond the anticipated time of arrival of the team bus, as an unprecedented number of people lined the streets and blocked the roads. It was dusk when they finally got to the City Centre, and we had a great vantage point from the roof of Lime Street Station overlooking St George’s Hall.
The photo is taken from this view point, and you can see how many people were waiting. To the left of the picture, between the traffic lights you can just make out a bus which got stranded amongst the crowds, which people then just sat on top of.
It was a fantastic atmosphere, and a shared family experience which I’m sure will be a lasting memory for us all.
