Embarking on Potty Training

Duhn, duhn, duhhhhhn! Said in sinister manner. It’s got to that time. We’ve passed the 2 year milestone and we’ve got to ‘start’ to think about potty training for Master H. Now, in theory I’ve been there, done this twice before, but it doesn’t feel like anything that I’m uber confident at.

I do know that they all get there in the end, and it has to be in their own time. I also know that having a potty upstairs and downstairs is much easier than rushing for one and being too late to deal with the consequences.

potty training, recommended potties, potty training toddlers, potty training tips, potty training boys, potty training girlsWe’ll be using Mamas and Papas Acqua Ergo Potty as at £9 each they are cheap enough to buy one for upstairs and downstairs. They are also of a simple design with no nooks and crannies for germs to reside. I learnt my lesson with my second child that novelty ‘throne’ potties scare the life out of them when she point blank refused to go near it.

We will also be introducing ‘the big toilet’ in conjunction with the potty and use a toilet seat to aid the transition. I hope that this will prevent any over reliance on the potty setting in. The Mamas and Papas Comfy Penguin Toilet Trainer has a padded seat so he can sit on the toilet for as long as he likes without getting dint marks in his legs from a potty. (Sometimes they just like to sit there for what feels like days, don’t they?)

Also essential for reaching the sink when you are embarking on the wash your hands mantra that will continue until they are about nine (if no. 2 child is anything to go by). The Mamas and Papas Step up Stool is great, it is very sturdy and has a non-slip rubber ridge design to prevent any sliding.

All the above is perfect in theory, but the main factor in the success of potty training is the ability of the child to grasp what needs to happen. So they need to recognise when they need the toilet, indicate to you to get ready with potty/hoisting onto toilet, and actually going through with, well, the motion.

Now I’m not saying it is an impossible journey, but this kind of attitude makes me wonder if we’ll ever get there…
