Journey 2 Mysterious Island has just been released for the big screen and like Dolphin Tale is a great family film. Lots of action and adventure. It was like a more magical Jurassic Park mixed with the humour of Ice Age 3. My 7 year old loved that Vanessa Hudgens (High School Musical) plays a feisty, strong character and the 2 year old loved the tiny elephants and flying on bugs. I’m not sure it is really suitable for children as young as 2 (nearly 3), but mine is a Jurassic Park fan so is immune to some of the scariness of giant lizards.
The story incorporated novels by Jules Verne, and also Treasure Island & Gullivers travels, which I think really appealed to my 7 year old. She also thought the ‘pec popping’ as seen in the trailer was hilarious.
My husband thought it was a ‘proper kids film – lots of action within the first 10 minutes’. There was lots of teenage hormones raging between Sean (Josh Hutcherson) and Kailani (Vanessa Hudgens). Michael Caine played a great adventurous grandfather to Sean, who entices them all to the island with his cryptic messages. Kailani’s father Gabato (Luiz Guzman) provides much of the comedy of the film, which had us all laughing out loud. Sean’s stepfather Hank is played by Dwayne Johnson (better known as The Rock from his wrestling days). He was there to indulge Sean in his need to find his grandfather and see if the Mysterious Island really did exist. He was rather good at getting them out of a few scrapes along the way.
We gave it a thumbs up, a great adventure film which appeals to both girls and boys (and mums & dads too).
Disclosure: Thank you to Warner Bros who gave us the tickets to view and review the film. All views are our own – we really did enjoy it ;0)
