Finished It Friday: School’s Out (& Nursery) Put out the Bunting

This week we are putting out the bunting for the summer holidays. The one below is a bit of mini bunting created for our Women’s Institute raffle but it could be adapted for anything. You could keep it plain or add children’s names. My notes of how I created it are below.

Also, this week, we saw the end of an era with Hugo finishing at his nursery. He’s been there since he was 10 months old, and it doesn’t seem like more than a few weeks since he started and those early days of him being distraught at being left are etched into my heart. He has made so many lovely friends, some who are joining him at the school nursery in September, which will be great for the transition.

I have no doubt that the staff at nursery really did love him, and weren’t just carers. These two also looked after my now 8 year old and it’s sad to think I won’t be seeing them teaching my children anymore.

Amelie also finished her first year of the juniors this week. This was taken on Tuesday evening before she went to the end of term disco. My little girl is growing up so fast. The gift for the classroom assistant who retired went down really well. She was thrilled and really appreciative, I’m so glad I did it now, as I wasn’t sure if it was the right thing to do. The day after she finished school we had a note home from the teacher to say her name has been put in the gold book for exceptional work. A great end to the year. We’ve been looking at obtaining some surprise tickets for a musical as a treat from someone who is looking to sell tickets at stubhub. Wicked and the Lion King are on my alerts, can anyone recommend any others worth looking for?

So, back to the bunting. I wanted something to draw member’s attention to the raffle prizes we sell tickets for at every monthly WI meeting. Space is at a premium in our jam packed meeting room so it had to be small enough to sit on a table.

Each little triangle was made individually as follows:

Cast on 2 sts

R1 Knit (2sts)

R2 KFB, K1 (3sts)

R3 Knit (3sts)

R4 KFB, P1, KFB (5sts)

R5 KFB, K3, KFB (7sts)

R6 K, P5, K (7sts)

R7 KFB, K5, KFB (9sts)

R8 K, P7, K (9sts)

R9 KFB, K9, KFB (11 sts)

R10 K, P9, K (11sts)

R11 P, K9, P (11sts)

I didn’t cast off these, but moved them down the needle and repeated with a new colour for the next triangle. When I had enough triangles, I knitted along the last triangle I had made, seen here in pink. I cast on 7sts before knitting along the blue triangle, and again cast on 7 sts between all the triangles before knitting along the tops of them. I knitted a row back and then did a cast off row.

Toddler fingers to show you the scale.
I then crotched approximately 15 chains to give something to hand the bunting with and then continued edging each triangle with a little picot edging. A very basic edge of one chain secured along the edge, chain 3 and secure back into the base of the beginning of the stitch, 1 chain along the edge of the the triangle and the 3 chain again. Keep repeating this along all the triangles and finish off with 15chain.
I cut out small circles in contrast colour felt and embroidered the letters on each before attaching to the knitted triangles.
It raised a few smiles at our Women’s Institute, some wanted to know if it was an actual prize for the raffle, which was lovely, but I did ask why would they want bunting with ‘Raffle’ written on it?

So what have you finished in the last week or so? A book, some craft, the crossword? Leave a comment so we can all ooh and aah.

spudballoo - Oh gosh you are SO CLEVER! Love the bunting and the photos are superb as ever. Oh these children are growing so fast! For the first time in 3 years I don't have a child starting in reception in September. Instead I have one going in to Year 2 and the other in to Year 1. Eh? How did that happen.

Lovely photos of your boy and gorgeous daughter. I love this time of year when we can all be proud and take stock, and enjoy the summer! Precious days xx

FrecklesFamily - Ah, thanks J! I think that about your children every time I see a blog post of them growing up so fast. Are you coming up to sunny Widnes over the summer? I\’ve got a new copy of Lacuna if you want it? If not I can stick it in the post. I\’m thinking about re-tackling Wolf Hall, didn\’t get very far with it last time.
